WHAT YOU CAN DO TO
MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
The best way for
you to help our environment is to try and reduce the daily
emissions your activities produce. Where it is not possible to
completely reduce the emissions you produce, you can make the
choice of offset those remaining emissions by planting trees (or
through the purchase of carbon credits). Either way is
simple and easy to get started, so act now to create a sustainable long term environment for our
children and their children to grow up in.

A few tips to reduce emissions in your
laboratory
-
Do not run PCR
machines with a 4oC
hold overnight. PCR reaction should be sterile and not
degrade over night at room temperature.
-
4oC
incubations could be run in temperature controlled
fridge/coldroom that is already in use, rather than a PCR
machine or similar instrument.
-
Use the
correct glove based on chemical resistance, thus decreasing
the need for double glove techniques and therefore reducing carbon
emissions from manufacturing and waste.
-
Consolidate
orders to one central delivery point if possible, thus
reducing the number of deliveries and frequency.
-
Organise cold
storage areas to reduce the door open time.
-
Reduce
equipment run times by utilising new technologies, such as
techniques for fast digest and PCR.
-
Consolidated
runs on particular equipment to reduce the number of runs
required.

A few tips to
reduce emissions in your daily life
-
Switch off
lights, appliances and equipment when not in use.
-
Set up
appropriate thermostats to keep your heating and cooling
system tuned.
-
Switch to the
energy-efficient compact fluorescent lights.
-
Use solar
power - dry your clothes under the sun, not in a dryer.
-
Minimise waste
on material - reduce, re-use and recycle.
-
Look for the
energy rating stars when purchasing new appliances.
-
Take green
transport options like public transport and bicycles.
